The Learning Commons Tutoring has free resources for all students in need of academic help.
Previously known as the Apple Lab, the Learning Commons (LC) was established in 1989 as a student service that offers free tutoring to everyone. Tutoring is regularly available in mathematics, accounting, biology, chemistry, CIS, statistics, physics, psychology, and economics. Not only does the LC offer in-person tutoring but they have online tutors as well.
Learning Commons coordinator Jane Verbout ,who has been working at the LC for over 31 years, explains the benefits students gain while being in the Learning Commons. She states 鈥淚t gives all students a place where they belong鈥. Part-time and full-time students are all welcome to the LC for any academic assistance or if they simply need a quiet place to study.
There are also new features coming to the Learning Commons tutoring program this year as well. Jane claimed that the Learning Commons will start to include 鈥淧op-up Tutoring鈥 and expressed that students should look out for cardboard cut-outs of the iconic 鈥淛ake from State Farm '' placed around the school. This will allow students to discover the location of the LC, get on the spot tutoring or be referred to a tutor.
Jane also stressed how underused the Learning Commons are by students. She says 鈥淲e run across students who we know could have used our help, are not aware of our services or feel there is a stigma to tutoring.鈥 The Learning commons is located in the library and is open Monday-Thursday 8am-7pm and Fridays 8am-2pm by appointment.
