As part of this, the college hosted many open forums to help identify potential opportunities. Through those conversations, various members of the community expressed their interest in establishing agriculture programs at the college. Additionally, ̽ѡ provides cooperative agreements for students to attend other institutions in situations where the college does not provide a given program and it was determined that agriculture was the top program for such requests. Local high schools have also seen growth in agricultural interest and our largest feeder high school, Sterling High School, created an FFA chapter and hired a new agriculture teacher. Based upon the totality of this information, the college created an advisory council to explore an AAS agriculture degree. The advisory council consisted of five high school instructors, numerous industry members, the Regional Office of Education Superintendent, and the director of the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. The industry members represented production, business, agronomy, and owners of local farms. The attendance at the meetings was high with 15-20 participating in discussion. The group progressively met 1-2 times a month over the fall semester and have created a proposed program that meets their respective needs. The proposed program will provide a required core of courses in agriculture, but also general education requirements. In addition, students will have the opportunity to complete two different tracks or emphases. One such emphases will be a technical track, which focuses on Welding and Electrical courses, while the other focuses on Business. In addition, the proposal requests that ̽ѡ seek a new Agriculture faculty member, who will not only provide instruction, but also assist in the growth of the program.
